Commission staff to conduct workshop in Atlanta

Staff from the Idaho Public Utilities Commission will be in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 23, to answer questions relating to a rate increase request filed by Atlanta Power Company.

The workshop, at 3 p.m. at the Pinnacle Peaks Sawtooth Lodge on 416 N. Greene Valley Lane, will give customers an opportunity to question commission staff regarding the issues the commission must consider the case. The workshop will begin with a presentation from staff followed by questions from customers. Representatives from the company may also be present to answer questions. Later, a public hearing will be held during which people can testify to the commissioners who decide the case. That hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 7.

Atlanta Power serves about 75 residential and commercial customers in the Elmore County community. The company is asking for a 60.6 percent increase in revenues. Atlanta Power proposes to increase the customer charge for all residential customers from $81 to $83 per month, but also proposes to double the energy charge from 5 cents for every kilowatt-hour consumed to 10 cents per kWh. Currently, customers pay only the customer charge after the first 500 kWh of use. The company proposes to eliminate the 500 kWh free allowance and charge 10 cents per kWh for all residential consumption.

For commercial customers, the company proposes an increase in the monthly rate from $144 to $165 and charge all consumption at 20 cents per kWh, up from the current 18 cents. The company proposes to eliminate it seasonal (weekend and part-time) rate schedule and move customers under this rate to the applicable residential or commercial rates.

In June, the commission approved a 33.6 percent surcharge to pay for expenses related to the failure of the company’s hydroelectric turbine last year. The surcharge portion of the rate case will be revisited during this consideration of the company’s proposed overall general rate increase.
